A bit about me.

So I’m writing this from a library in Camberwell, Melbourne. How did I get here? I’m currently doing a masters in IT at Southern Cross University. Originally from Sri Lanka, I’ve been designing for over 5 years, working with teams in the US, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.

Early days

From software engineering undergraduate to UX Designer — I began interning in UX during my final year of campus. Upon reading into the subject, I was immediately attracted to it. As someone who critiques every digital product I use, it felt like something up my alley.

I started teaching myself UX while interning at Thiken - an award winning software agency based in Austin, Texas. Fast forward 5 years, and I have worked in product companies focused on their in-house app to individual freelance clients with their crazy ideas.

Design philosophy

There’s many things I learned over the years, but a few thing stood out which helped me create my design philosphy.

Good design is invisible.

An interface is supposed to guide the user to their destination, not be the centre of attention. Good looks are pointless if the user cannot solve their problems using it. Delighting a user is important, but it should happen in the background. Design should be about the “what” but rather the “how”.

“It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” — Steve Jobs

Never stop learning

Specially being in a creative role, I have learned the importance of being on top of the latest trends. Design is an ever evolving field and it is crucial that you stay relevant and also keep your creative juices flowing

I always try out new products I come across on the Appstore, Twitter or on Product Hunt to see if they have any new features or patterns that I can take inspiration from.

I also keep an eye out for any new design resources where I can improve my skills at.

Only ship what you’re proud of

I always try not to make the environment control me. If a deadline or a timeframe would mean I have to compromise on the quality of the output, I change that environment.

We have to always aim to ship things we’re proud of making.

Team work makes the dream work.

By experience, I have found the importance of collaboration in creative environments. Problem solving is at its best when you collaborate with people from different backgrounds.

Team mates from different cultural and educational backgrounds have different levels of creativity and critical thinking.
